At just six years old, Ruby Bridges became a symbol of bravery and change when she became the first African American child to integrate an all-white elementary school in the segregated South. On her first day at William Frantz Elementary in New Orleans, Ruby was escorted by federal marshals to protect her from violent crowds who hurled insults and threats at her.
Despite the hatred and isolation, Ruby walked into that school every day with courage. The white children were kept home by their parents, leaving her alone in her class, but Ruby's determination never wavered. She became a living testament to the power of standing up to systemic racism, showing the world the strength of the young, the vulnerable, and those who dare to push for equality.
Ruby Bridges reminds us that courage can come in the smallest of forms, and even a child’s resolve can change the world.
Today Ruby Bridges is 70 years old, and a well-known philanthropist, activist, and icon of the civil rights movement.
She did an interview about a year ago with Stephen Colbert... you should definitely hear Ruby's story from her.
