Mary Turner

Women's History Month 2025

Mary Turner’s love was fierce, and for that, she was silenced. When her husband was lynched in 1918, the young, pregnant Mary dared to demand justice. For speaking out, she too was brutally murdered—an act of unspeakable cruelty meant to instill fear.

But love does not die so easily. Love lingers in the spaces between grief and memory, in the embrace of those who refuse to forget. Mary’s story is one of sorrow, but also of defiance—of a woman who would not stay silent, even when the world demanded her submission. Submission can never be taken by force.

Her name remains a testament to love’s enduring strength and a call for justice—so that no voice is ever silenced again.

It was Mary Turner's life that made me decide to do this series spotlighting injustices for women. I hope I'm doing it justice.
