Jennet Device was just nine years old when her testimony condemned her own mother, brother, and grandmother in the 1612 Pendle Witch Trials. Her words, likely coerced, sealed their fate, sending them to the gallows.
Over 20 years later, the same system that once used her as a tool turned against her. In 1634, she was accused of witchcraft by a young boy and imprisoned in Lancaster Castle, enduring the same horrific conditions as her family before her. There is no record of her release—she likely died in imprisoned.
Jennet Device’s story is a chilling reminder that fear and hysteria spare no one, not even those who once believed themselves safe.
