Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow's life was cut short by a merciless militant tribunal. In 2008, the 13-year-old Somali girl was falsely accused of adultery and stoned to death by a group of 50 men in a public stadium. Some witnesses tried to intervene, but armed militants opened fire on them.
The facts of her case are heartrending.
Leading up to her death, reports indicate that she was traveling to her grandmother's house when she was raped by armed attackers.
Her aunt took her to report what had been done, and instead of helping her and seeking justice, they made a public display of killing her.
As a 13 year old child, she was too young to even be eligible to marry though initial reports said she was 23 and had committed adultery.
There's no evidence to suggest her attackers were ever sought out to answer for their actions.
Aisha's story is a tragic reminder of the importance of upholding human rights and the need to protect those most vulnerable. By remembering Aisha's life and death, we can honor her memory and work to build a world where such atrocities are never repeated, and where every person can live without fear of violence or oppression.
